Course Description:
Welcome!  Tenth Grade World Literature is designed to introduce students to works of literature from writers spanning myriad times, historical periods, places, cultures, and belief systems from all over the world.  The works we study in this class include myths, folk tales, legends, epics, short stories, novels, poetry, drama, and nonfiction.  An important objective throughout this class will be to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the human experience: how people from varying times, places, and cultures have addressed common archetypal themes such as origins, coming of age, relationships, heroism, perseverance, sacrifice, transformation, and death.  We will use our study of World Literature to further develop our writing and speaking skills.  Additionally, we will spend much of the year studying various cultures, analyzing cultural contexts and perspectives, and considering purpose and audience as we craft our own academic work.  By the end of this course, students will be better prepared for the Student Learning Objective Exam in May, the Georgia Milestones End-of-Course assessment at the end of their junior year, and other academic reading and writing beyond the English classroom and beyond the confines of school life.
